As we began to make plans for altering our home to move my mother in with us, I remembered  seeing something about Granny Pods or Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU). I began to research the process and like what I found.  You can purchase accessory dwelling units in a pre-fabricated form, or you can hire a contractor to build one. Bob Villa suggests you can convert a shed or garage space for much less. Sounds like a great option, but do I live in a community or county that will allow one?   

 As of September of 2019, Sarasota County will allow Accessory Dwelling Units on most residential lots outside the city limits, in zoned single family residential areas that are non-deed restricted – and if the lots can meets size requirements.  The amended code allows up to 750 sq ft of living area to be built in a similar style and finish to the primary home – without having it counted as a separate house. 

Being able to extend an affordable living arrangement for aging parents on a fixed income is a fantastic solution and can afford a better quality of life for those nearing dependent living. It gives options to our parents to enjoy their life without worry or fear.

How could this affect resale – it is yet to be seen. I don’t see any serious concerns since we live in an area where this is a real need.   I thank Sarasota County for making a great affordable living decision.  I predict it will be a big hit - and a sought-after home feature of great value.
